朱爱岚（Ellen R.Judd），加拿大社会文化人类学家。在加拿大的不列颠歌伦比亚大学获得博士学位并在剑桥大学做博士后研究之前，于1974－1977年间曾在北京语言学院、复旦大学和北京大学就读。后在加拿大多所大学任教。目前是马尼托巴大学的人类学教授。1986－1995 年她在山东省进行田野研究，并据此撰写了两部著作和若干论文。两部著作分别是《中国北方村落的社会性别与权力》和《国家与市场之间的中国妇女》。她还主编过《中国改革时代的农村妇女》（《中国人类学和社会学》杂志1999年专刊），并合编过《从事发展事业的女权主义者》（Zed出版社2000年）。基于田野考察和文献资料，她还就中国南方各地（主要是上海、湖南和福建）戏剧中的文化生产问题做过研究。她目前正致力于中国西部农村流动、社会性别、社区结构与妇女网络的一个田野研究项目。

白馥兰(Francesca Bray)英国剑桥大学社会人类学博士，研究兴趣集中于农业体系、日常技术、社会性别、医疗与身体等方面，并专攻东亚及东南亚地区。曾居住在马来西亚乡村参加稻田种植。现任美国圣巴巴拉加州大学人类学系教授。其主要著作除本书外，尚有李约瑟主编《中国的科学与文明》之第六卷第二分册(农业)(1984)、《稻米经济：亚洲社会的技术与发展》(1994)、《明代中国的技术与社会，1368—1644年》(2000)。本书于1997年出版后，曾于1999年获美国技术史学会所颁发的德克斯特奖(DxterPrize)。
